Gathering in Tokyo to update friends about the Voyage

On December 15 we had a gathering at a local pizza restaurant at which we updated people about the voyage.  Per Knudsen told how Doug’s interest in sailing was, in part, sparked by Doug sailing with him and his wife, Anne, on their boat in Japan.  Per and Anne gave Doug a teru-teru-bozu to take on the teams’s boat, Dream Weaver.  A teru teru bōzu (Japanese: てるてる坊主, literally “shine shine monk”) is a small, traditional handmade doll made of white paper or cloth that Japanese farmers began hanging outside of their window by a string.  This talisman is supposed to have magical powers to bring good weather and to stop or prevent a rainy day.

Shrine Visit / お参り

Hiro and Doug visited Namiyoke Inari Shrine (波除稲荷神社 Namiyoke inari-jinja) to pray for a safe passage.  Hiro was especially keen to go to the shrine since they did not visit the shrine before the last voyage.   Namiyoke Inari Shrine (波除稲荷神社 Namiyoke inari-jinja) is a Shinto shrine located in Tsukiji, Chūō, Tokyo. It is an Inari shrine that was built on the water’s edge when that part of Tokyo (then Edo) was created from landfill after the Great Fire of Meireki in 1657. The name of the shrine literally means “protection from waves.”

After the Tsukiji Fish Market was established in its present location after the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake, the Namiyoke Inari Shrine became an unofficial guardian shrine for the marketplace and its traders. The courtyard of the shrine is dotted with various memorial plaques and carvings donated by trade groups in the marketplace.
