ノルウェーの商船隊の船長だったヘリー・J・ハンセン。彼は37歳で船乗りをリタイアすると、フィヨルドに面した港町モスに”オイルスキンクロス＆キャンバス工場”を設立しました。1877年のことでした。プロ向けのオイルスキン製造を始めたこの小さな工場こそ、現在では世界中のセイラーたちに信頼されているウェアブランド、ヘリーハンセンの起源なのです。第1号の製品は、亜麻仁油をしみこませたセイルキャンバス製の消化バケツ。そして翌年にはパリ万博の展示会で、シーマン衣料部門のデザイン賞を獲得。1950年にはウェルダー縫製による世界初の完全防水ウェアの商品化に成功しました。130年以上を経たいま、防水テクノロジーの進化とともに新たな防水ウェアを市場に供給し続ける、ヘリーハンセンです。
